My Precious Mila,
July 30, 2024

Today you turned 1 Year 2 Months.

This month, tested our spirits more than usual. It began with what seemed like a simple cough and runny nose, but as your symptoms worsened, our concern deepened. After multiple visits to the hospital and the doctor, and initial diagnoses of Croup, the persistence of your symptoms led to a surprising diagnosis of Whooping Cough, despite being fully vaccinated. The nights have been particularly tough, with your cough lingering and often leading to distressing moments of you throwing up.

Amidst the health scares, life's celebrations paused for no one. With a lineup of birthdays — including mine, Aunt She She's, Grandpa Gary's, and Brooke's — we planned our traditional gathering in Galveston. Eager for a break and some festive cheer, I flew out a few days early, full of anticipation. Amidst the uncertainty, I found myself urging your mom to bring you down to join us, hoping the change of scenery might lift our spirits. Unfortunately, your continued discomfort cast a shadow over the festivities, a stark reminder of the delicate balance between desire and reality when it comes to parenting.

However, not all was gloomy! This month, you achieved a monumental milestone: your very first steps! Captured forever on video, you took 2-3 tentative steps before gravity reminded us that patience is part of learning to walk. Each time you fell, we cheered, remembering that every little stumble is just a step in the journey. Everytime you fall I remind you by saying, "What do we do when we fall? We get back up!" While you're still not walking more than a few steps at a time, every attempt fills us with pride and anticipation for all the places those little feet will take you.

Your blossoming vocabulary continues to bring joy each day. From your excited "aff aff" greeting to Volk, the dog, every morning, to your clear and enthusiastic "mama," each word you learn expands your world a little more. Although you still refer to me as "dada," despite my preference for "papa," every word you speak adds a unique tone to the melody of your growth. And of course, there's "lala," the sweet name you've given to your cherished dolls.

Perhaps the sweetest of all your new skills is how you've learned to blow kisses, a gesture you now generously bestow on everything from your rubber duckies during bath time to us as you say goodbye. It’s these tender moments that remind us of the joy and innocence you bring into our lives, making each challenge worthwhile.

As we look forward to the coming month, we hold onto hope for your full recovery and eagerly anticipate all the new adventures your little feet and expanding vocabulary will bring us. Mila, know that through every step, every word, and every challenge, we are here—arms stretched out, ready to encourage, celebrate, and catch you if needed. Keep growing, keep shining, our brave little girl.

With all the love in the world,

Your Papa
